*Jubilee of Brother Joseph Muttanolil*: Kitchen staff members and workers in

the campus celebrated the Golden Jubilee of Profession of Brother Joseph

Muttanolil on 02 March 2011.  Holy Eucharist (in Tamil), felicitation

meeting, high tea, etc. were the items of the day.

 

*Retreat at St. Thomas*: Father Xavier Khan Vattayi and team conducted a

retreat for the public from 02 to 06 March.  The venue was the play grounds

of Christ School.  An average of five thousand people attended the retreat.

On Sunday 06 March, the concluding day, there were around six thousand eager

and enthusiastic participants.

 

*Award:* Christa Vidyalaya (our Kannada School) received the award for the

Best Management of Kannada Schools of Bangalore District from the

Government.  Father Antony Payyappilly, the Principal, received a Citation,

Shield, and other gifts from the Office for Kannada Schools.

 

*Father Rector blessed and inaugurated the new block of Christa Vidyalaya*.

The ground floor is for the nursery section of Christ School.  First floor

has some class rooms.  Second floor is the auditorium.  Christ School

financed the construction.  Father Joseph Rathapilly is the Principal of

Christ School.

 

*New Mass Centre*: We have started a new Mass Centre at Thampuchettipalaya

near Krishna-Raja-Puram.  Dr. Joseph Vayalil George, the Chairman and

Managing Director of Garden City College, has constructed a beautiful hall

behind the College, which can accommodate around three hundred people, for

our use.  It has all the other facilities: bathrooms, store room, water and

electricity connection, approach road, etc.  The place was blessed and

inaugurated by Fathers Rector Augustine Thottakara, Forane Church Vicar

Mathew Koikara, Mathew Chandrankunnel and Cherian Thunduparambil.  Father

Mathew Chandrankunnel inspired Dr. Joseph to construct this hall.  Father

Cherian Thunduparambil is in charge of this Centre.  There are around 150

Syro-Malabar families in this area.

 

*Fellowship Meal*: On Sunday 20 March St. Thomas Forane Church organized the

annual fellowship meal *(uttu-nercha)* in honour of St. Joseph.  Around five

thousand people, including Hindus and Muslims of the neighbourhood, shared

the simple food, prepared by volunteers of the Parish.

 

*DVK* Closed for summer recess on Friday 25 March 2011.

 

*I Year Philosophy*: Village Social Exposure programme (VSEP) at Vettathoor

with the Akashaparavakal (First Group; from 27 March) and Kaundapalaya, in

the Parish and AIDS Centre (Second Group; from 09 April).  Both these places

are in Coimbatore Province.

 

*II Year Theology*: Rural and Social Exposure Programme (RSEP):  From 03 to

20 April 2011 at Bijnor.

 

*II Year Philosophers* left for their respective Provinces on 27 March.  All

the Theology students leave for their respective Provinces on 02/03 April

2011.

 

*Young Philosophers Award*: Father Rector distributed the awards for the

best young CMI philosophers of this academic year on Saturday 26 March

during supper time.  The recipients of these awards (Rs. ten thousand each)

are Brother Rony Kizhakkekara (MA Philosophy) and Brother Shijin Pulimoottil

(B.Ph.).  “Voerderverein Neues Kerala” of Bonn instituted this award.

 

*Ordinations:* The Minor Orders  -  Karoya and Heupadiakona  -  were

conferred on our students of Theology on Friday 01 April 2011.  There were

twenty-four CMI brothers for Karoya and thirty-two for Heupadiakona.

 

Diakonate was conferred on thirty-three brothers on Saturday 02 April at

09.oo a.m.

 

Bishop Mar Gratian Mundadan ordained these brothers.

Theology III & II Students and I Theology Year Students who have already

made their perpetual religious commitment: 27 May 2011.

 

College students leave Dharmaram as and when their examinations come to an

end, and arrive Dharmaram according to the commencement of their respective

courses.

*Third Year B.Th. (Final Year) Students of DVK* were invited to share our
lunch on Thursday 03 February.  There are seventy-seven students in this
class.  Father Rector welcomed them.  Thirty-two CMI students do this
course.

*The Newly Ordained Priests*:  This year fifty-six Deacons were ordained in
the CMI Congregation.  Thirty-three of them are from Dharmaram.  They all
came back to Dharmaram on 04 February 2011.  On 04 February evening they
celebrated the Holy Eucharist for our kitchen staff.  On Saturday 05
February they celebrated the Holy Eucharist in the St. Thomas Forane Church.
They carried out pastoral ministry on Sunday 06 February in their respective
Parishes/Wards.  These Parishes/Wards gave them very warm reception.  They
received their B.Th. Degree during the Convocation Ceremony on Monday 07
February at DVK.  The *Samavarttanam, *the sending out ceremony, was
conducted on 08 February evening at Dharmaram.  Father Rector, Father
President and Father Master gave their final advices to the young priests in
this very touching ceremony.  The day’s programme was concluded with the
farewell dinner.

*Msgr. Dr. Dominik Schwaderlapp*, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of
Cologne, and his Assistants Dr. Nadin Ammann and Ms. Jose Compier, joined us
for supper on 07 February.  After the supper the Vicar General spoke to our
students.  He also celebrated the Holy Eucharist for the Community on
Tuesday 08 February.

*Research Centre of DVK* was blessed and inaugurated on Monday 07 February.
Father Prior General, Vicar General of Archdiocese of Cologne, some CMI
Provincials, Campus Superiors and other dignitaries were present for this
function.

*Ghaziabad*: Father Rector laid the foundation stone for the buildings that
are to be constructed in the property of Christ University at Ghaziabad on
10 February 2011 (anniversary of the birthday of Blessed Chavara).  The
CMI-staff of Christ University was also present for this function.

*LCA Valedictory Meeting* was on 11 February 2011.  Chief Guest: Mr. Deepak
Justin (Media Person, Public Speech Trainer); Guest of Honour: Miss Winnie
Panickar (Young Poet); President of the Meeting: Rector Father Augustine
Thottakara.  LCA (Literary and Cultural Academy of Dharmaram) has been very
active and dynamic this year.  The Directors are: Fathers Shaji Kochuthara
and Benoy Checkonthayil; Secretaries are: Brothers Nilson Pellissery and
Lijo Chennattu.

*English Drama*: In connection with the LCA Valedictory, the College Section
(D-Section) staged *Julius Caesar*, the Shakespearean Melodrama, on 12 and
13 February (Saturday and Sunday).  The performance of the students was
fantastic.  Father Viju Painadath is the Master of D-Section, and Father
Benny Nalkara is the Animator.

*Chavara Day*: Chavara Bhavan celebrated the Chavara Day on Monday 14
February.  The Concelebrated Holy Eucharist was led by Father Rector.  Holy
Eucharist was followed by festal dinner.  Father Francis Thonippara is the
Prefect of Chavara Bhavan.

*St. Thomas Forane Church*, Dharmaram, celebrated the feast of Saints Thomas
and Sebastian on Saturday and Sunday, 26-27 February 2011.  This is a big
annual event for the Catholics of Bangalore.  Thousands turn up for the
festivities.  Cultural items by the parishioners, social drama by a
professional troupe from Kerala, etc. were part of the celebrations.  The
public meeting was presided over by Archbishop Bernard Moras, Archbishop of
Bangalore.  Local MLA Shri Ramalinga Reddy was Guest of Honour.  Father
Mathew Koikara is the Parish Priest (Vicar) and Father Eby Cheerakathottam
is the Assistant.

*ASVAS**,* Dharmaram Centre for Differently Abled, is active.  Five days a
week, Monday to Friday, we give warm meals to the poor, elderly and disabled
persons.  Around 120 come every day.  Food is prepared by volunteers.

From 14 to 24 February Asvas organized a Manual Training Programme for
twenty physically disabled persons.

Programmes Planned (These Programmes are organized in collaboration with
“Enable India”): Training for the Trainers: March 22-25.  Course meant for
persons from NGO-s who desire to work for disabled persons.

Life Skill Programme (Residential) for visually impaired people: from 11
April to 26 August 2011.

CCNA (Co-Certified Network Associates) Programme for Disabled: Online
training for computer networking and allied skills: from 14 March 2011 to 17
February 2012.

Job Oriented Skill-Training Programme: Residential course for twenty
disabled persons (date to be announced).

*Christmas Programme for the Mentally Challenged People*: Some staff members
of NIMHANS accompanied forty mentally challenged people to Dharmaram, who
are being treated there, on 27 December.  They visited the crib; brothers
sang some Christmas carols for them; some Santa Clauses danced for them; and
they thoroughly enjoyed our hospitality, which also included afternoon tea
and snacks..

*International Seminar* on “Mysticism without Bounds” was organized on 05-08
January 2011.  Around 320 delegates from all over the world took part in it.
There were around 140 paper presentations in groups and seven key-note
addresses.  Twenty-four CMI priests/brothers presented papers.  The Seminar
was a grand success. Father Kurian Kachappilly, CMI was the organizer.

*Founder’s Day *was observed on Sunday 09 January 2011.  In the public
meeting Mr. Jossy Peter (Event manager), Sister Princy, FCC (Superior,
Alphonsa Bhavan), and representatives from Dharmaram spoke about Blessed
Chavara.  Christ University-Christ Junior College, Christ School, Christa
Vidyalaya and Dharmaram College presented cultural items.  For the festal
lunch we have invited representatives from our Parishes, Mass Centres and
Wards.  Around 80 guests shared our lunch.

*Semestral Dialogue* of Staff and Students were conducted on 11, 12 and 13
January 2011.

*Ruby Jubilee:* Father Augustine Thottakara (Rector) and Father Alex
Thannipara were Ordained on 03 January 1971, on the 100th anniversary of
death of our Blessed Founder. On this 03rd January this year they have
completed forty years of priestly life.  They invited their companions to
Dharmaram to celebrate this event.  Eighteen confreres turned up.  They were
our guests on 15-18 January 2011.

*Father Mathew Chandrankunnel:* Commission for Laity of Syro-Malabar Church
has appointed him as the National Director of the section for Science and
Technology.

*Father Mathew Koikara*, Vicar St. Thomas Forane Church, has been appointed
by the Archbishop of Bangalore as a member of the College of Consultors of
the Archdiocese.

*Msgr. Charles J. Scicluna, *famous Canonist, now working at the
Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, Vatican, gave a lecture on “More
Grave Delicts Reserved to the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith:
Substantive and Procedural Laws” at DVK on 19 January.

*One-day Outing *of the Community was fixed on Saturday 22 January.  But the
State wide *bandh *organized by BJP marred our programmes.  We celebrated
the Outing in the Campus itself!

*St. Jude’s Church, Udayanagar*: Archbishop Bernard Moras blessed the newly
constructed Church on 23 January.  The Church, especially the sanctuary, is
beautifully done.  The building complex attached to the Church has all the
infrastructural facilities: Rectory, Assembly hall, Seminar halls, Class
rooms for Catechism, Office rooms, Guest rooms, Offices of associations,
etc.  Father Sebastian Edathikavil is the Parish Priest, and Father Benoy
Checkothayil is the Assistant.  The Public Meeting in the evening was
presided over by Bishop Bosco Puthur.

*Unity Octave*: Father Jessen P.Y. (Malankara Orthodox Church) Father Binu
Joseph Ponnokkaran (Assyrian Church of the East), spoke on Ecumenism and
Inter-Church relationship on the last two days of Unity Octave, 24 and 25
January.

*Chavara Quiz*: The annual Chavara Quiz Competition between Dharmaram and
CMC Juniorate Jnanodaya is conducted with great enthusiasm and passion.  This
year it was on 25 January.  Winners are Jose Paul Thekkanath and Sebastian
Roadarikath (II Year Theology).

*Republic Day*: Message was delivered by Col. Stani Joseph of MEG (Madras
Engineering Group) of Bangalore.

*Guests from Germany*: Rev. Dr. Msgr. Heinz Betlef Staps, Head of the
Department of World Mission of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, and Dr.
Johannes Bielefeld, long-time Head of the Project Department of the same
Diocese, visited us on January 26 and shared our lunch.

*LCA Competitions* for items like skit, fancy dress, mono act, dance,
speech, song, essay writing, etc. are being conducted these days.

*Musical Concert: Father Andre Patenaude (Father Pat),* a La Sallete Priest
from the USA, is a famous singer.  He gives concerts all over the world.  He
sang for us for about one hour on 28 January.  His music was quite elevating
and all listened to him in rapt attention.

*Jubilee, Jubilee!:* The Golden Jubilee of the Commitment to Consecrated
Life of Father Varghese Pathikulangara and Brother Joseph Muttanolil and the
Silver Jubilee of Priestly Ordination of Father Kurian Kachapilly were
celebrated on Saturday 29 January 2011.  Celebration of solemn Holy
Eucharist, Felicitation Meeting and Festal Lunch were the programmes of the
day.  In the meeting many particularly thanked and congratulated Brother
Joseph Muttanolil for the great services he is rendering to the Community.  A
Festschrift in honour of Father Varghese Pathikulangara edited by Father
Paulachan Kochapilly, and a booklet about the life and activities of Brother
Joseph Muttanolil written by Father Benny Nalakara, were also released on
this auspicious occasion.

*Father John Menonkariyil, *who has served Dharmaram as Financial
Administrator, Bursar, etc., celebrates the Golden Jubilee of Religious
Profession this year.  He visited Dharmaram in the first week of February
2011.  We celebrated his Jubilee in a modest way on 02 February 2011.Dharmaram News

*Brother Aby Thanickal*, who is being treated for lung-cancer, is responding
well to medications.  He is undergoing Chemo-treatment at St. John’s
Bangalore.  The growth in his lungs has reduced in size.  Shortly he will be
subjected to radiation therapy also.  All are hopeful of complete cure.

*Asvas* (Dharmaram Centre for Differently Abled) is doing very well.  On 04
December *Asvas*, together with the NGO “Enable India”, organized a *Job
Fair* for disabled persons for unskilled jobs.  Around 85 disabled persons
took part in fair, and 56 got jobs, mainly as helpers in kitchen,
restaurant, etc.  This indeed was a great success.

*Asvas* organized the conclusion of the three months’ intense training in
computer, languages, etc. of thirty young men, all graduates, with physical
disabilities.  The course was conducted at *Asvas *with the help of the NGO
“Enable India”.  Twelve of them lived in our premises.  In the farewell
meeting Father Rector, officials of Enable India, and trainers took part.  Five
of these students are already hired by IBM.

*Food for the Poor*: On the Christmas day at noon Father Rector inaugurated
the “Food for the Poor” project of *Asvas.*  Father John Marius
Manickanamparambil, Director of *Asvas,* has already formed, with the help
of St. Thomas Forane Parish, a group of volunteers.  They are divided into
smaller groups.  These groups will take turn to cook food for distribution
on five days a week.  Father Joseph Madassery supervises the
distribution.  Anybody
can sponsor this midday meals: only Rs. 2000,-- for a day.

*Asvas,* together with APD (Association of People of Disability) and some
NGO-s, is organizing a Camp of deaf and dumb children on 24-27 December 2010
in our Christa Vidyalaya (Kannada School).  200 such children and their
parents (altogether 400 persons) will be taught the systematic and
internationally accepted sign language, and other methods of aiding the deaf
and dumb.  They all live on these days in the School.

*Retreat for Supporting Staff*: A two-day retreat was organized for the
Tamil Christians among our supporting staff.  Father Anto Nayankara, CMI
preached the retreat in Tamil.  Father Joseph Madassery is spiritual
director of the supporting staff.

*Winners: *In the *Inter-Sem* tournaments Dharmaram has so far won the first
place in Basket Ball and Shuttle Badminton.

*Feast of Immaculate Conception*: Father Roy Vettikuzhy gave the message for
the Renovation of Vows.  Rosary procession to the grotto and Consecration to
the Immaculate Heart of Mary were organized in the evening.  Bro. Vipin
Kurishuthara preached the homily.

*Father Jose Frank Chackalackal, CMI* addressed the Community on “Ecumenical
Movement of Kunnamkulam” on 14 December, after supper.

*Bishop Jonas Thaliath Endowment Lectures* of the Faculty of Theology were
delivered by Rabbi Prof. Dr. Joseph Edelheit (USA) on 16-17 December on
“Jewish-Christian Dialogue in 21st Century”.

*Christmas Carol Competitions: *Dharmaram Choir won the third prize in the
Carol Singing Competition conducted by Jeevalaya on 12 December.  Our Choir
also participated in the Carol singing Competition organized by Joy Alukkas
group.

*Christmas Celebrations of Dharamaram Zone of CRI: *It celebrated Christmas
with a variety of cultural items on 18 December at the Provincialate of the
Congregation of Our Lady Providence (FMM).

*Christmas Carol Singing*: LCA-Dharmaram invited our neighbouring
Communities to sing Carols at Dharmaram auditorium on Monday 20
December.  Eighteen
Communities presented Carol songs.  It was indeed a joyous experience.

*Christmas Greetings to the Families of Supporting Staff: *Father Rector,
together with some students of Theology, visited the families of our
supporting staff, who live in the Campus: Nepalese families, Dharmaram
kitchen staff quarters and Tamil families of Dairy farm.  We sang carols for
them, prayed in their houses and father Rector blessed them and gave them
Christmas cakes.

*Christmas Celebrations of the Service Staff*: As usual, we invited all the
supporting staff, which includes also dairy workers, garden workers,
security personnel, sweepers, etc., and their families for the Christmas
celebrations on 24 December evening.  Brothers greeted them in Malayalam,
Kannada, Tamil and Hindi.  Our friends presented cultural items in all these
languages.  Finally Father Rector wished them ‘Happy Christmas’ and gave
Christmas gifts to all the families.

*Christmas Programme in the TV*: Dharmaram Brothers enacted a skit on
Christmas for Dooradarshan and it was telecast on 21 December evening,
together with other programmes on Christmas presented by other Christian
groups.

*Crib:* I Year Theologians, under the leadership of their Master Father
Cherian Thunduparambil, created the crib this year.  It is in the shape of a
train – “The Emmanuel Express”.  It depicts the salvation history.  Brothers
did a marvellous job.  Newspapers characterized it as the biggest Crib of
the City!

*Christmas Star*: Brothers of E-Section has created and erected a huge star
in front of our reception area.  A really huge star, which catches the
attention of all.

*Minor Orders* to our Theologians will be conferred on Friday 01 April
2011evening and the *Holy Order of Diaconate* will be conferred to the III
Year Theologians on Saturday 02 April morning.  Bishop Jose Chittooparambil
confers these Orders.

*Ordinations*: Between 26 December 2010 and 02 January 2011 fifty-six CMI
Deacons will be ordained to priesthood.  Thirty-three of them are from
Dharmaram.  These Deacons solicit our prayers and blessings.

*Convocation* of this academic year will take place on Monday 07 February
2011 and *Samavartanam *is on Tuesday 08 February.

*Dharmaram News*

 

*Shalom TV* intends to televise religious/spiritual programmes of Dharmaram

College, and of our Parishes.  They did this from 20 to 28 October.  A crew

of twenty technicians descended on Dharmaram for this purpose.  They filmed

celebrations of Holy Eucharist (in Malayalam and English) in our Chapel (on

23.10: the whole day), and Rosary in our Grotto (22 October), some church

celebrations, etc.  Fathers Mathew Koikara and Joy Kakkanattu were the

Directors of this project.  Brother George Panamthottam and team were the

local organizers.

 

*Brother Aby Thanickal*, II Year Theology, Muvattupuzha Province: Doctors

have detected a growth in his lungs, and it is cancerous.  For a few days he

was treated in the Amala Hospital, Thrissur.  Now he is undergoing

Chemo-treatment at St. John’s Bangalore.  In your charity please do pray for

the speedy recovery.  Dharmaram Community prayed for him especially in a

one-hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on 11 November.

 

*Rev. Brother Blessen Thundiyil* (I Year Theology) went back to his Province

(Kozhikode) on 18 October.  He has health problems due to the climatic

conditions of Bangalore.  He will continue his studies at the MCBS Seminary.

 

*Rev. Brother Bony Vettamthadathil* (I Year Theology) too went back to his

Province (Kozhikode) on 18 October.  He has been appointed as teacher of

physical education at Devagiri College.

 

*Brother Jeff Shawn Kaippetiyil*, II Year Licentiate in Philosophy,

presented a paper entitled “Customization and Chaos Theory: Interfacing

Philosophy, Modern Science and Technology” at IGNOU (Indira Gandhi Open

University) Delhi, at the National Seminar on “Philosophy and Distance

Learning: Innovations in Knowledge Infusion”, on 28-29- October 2010.  He

did it well.  Our congratulations to him!

 

*Bishop Mar Aprem, Metropolitan* of the Church of the East in India

(Thrissur), (Chaldean Syrian Church of the East) visited us and shared our

lunch on 20 October 2010.  He gave a short message to the community during

lunch time.

 

*Karnataka Rajyotsava Day*: We duly celebrated the Rajyotsava Day on 01

November.  Solemn Holy Eucharist in Kannada, Flag Hoisting, Message by

Father Rector, etc. were the items of the day.  Karnataka celebrates this

day with great solemnity and with variety of programmes.  It is like Onam

for Keralites.

 

*Dharmaram Marathon Race* in connection with Rector’s Day was organized 02

November.  More than hundred students took part in it.  Brothers Roney

Erupoolumkattil, Jojo Plapallil and Johnson Kochukaniamparambil won the

first, second and third prizes respectively.  The only staff member who

completed the race is father Shaji Kochuthara.

 

*LCA Programmes*: In semstral holidays LCA organized a two-day seminar on

creative writing and speaking (27-28 October).  Father Vincent Kundukulam

from St. Joseph’s Seminary Mangalapuzha was the resource person.

 

*Poetry-Writing and Reciting: *More than sixty students and a few staff

members wrote poetry and recited it for the Community on 02-03 November.  Some

of the poetries were excellent.

 

*Film Making Competition*: Each Section could register for one strip of film

on relevant themes.  Films were screened on the Deepavali Day, 05 November

2010.  Some of the themes were water, life, youth, children, etc.  D-Section

(College-Section) won the prize.

 

*Science Exhibition*: Christ Junior College organized the annual Science

Exhibition on 29-30 October.  Students prepared around 60 stalls.  Big firms

like HAL, BEL, etc. also exhibited their wares.

 

*Chanda Mission* is celebrating the Golden Jubilee of its establishment next

year.  Our Parishes and Mass Centres made special collection on the Mission

Sunday for Chanda Mission.  Our educational institutions also

contributed.  Thus

we were able to give some financial support to this flourishing Mission

Diocese under the able guidance of Bishop Mar Vijayanad Nedumpuram, CMI.  It

is to be noted that Syro-Malabar Church, on the occasion of this Jubilee,

has declared August 2011 to August 2012 as Mission Year

 

*Sports Day* in connection with Rector’s Day was conducted on 06 November.  As

usual the third year theologians organized it.  March past, inaugural

function, Events for staff, track and field events for students, honouring

the winners, etc. were the items.  D-Section (College Section) won the first

place.  Bro. Tinse Nedumparampil (F-Section) is the individual

Champion.  Traditionally

the Band Set of Christa Vidyalaya (our Kannada School) used to play for us

on this day.  This year, besides Christa Vidyalaya, Christ Academy ICSE

School, Begur (Thrissur Province) volunteered to play for us.  The display

this band put up was really fantastic.

 

*Deepavali *(05 November): Brothers of E-Section have organized a beautiful

*Father Thomas Manickam (RIP):* DVK celebrated a special Requiem Mass for

Father Manickam on 05 November.  The entire DVK community took part in it.

 

*KCSSA *(Kerala Catholic Social Service Association) under the patronage of

Dharmaram is now 35 years old.  Its annual day celebrations were conducted

on 07 November.

 

*Sraddhanjali**:* 07 November is the death Anniversary of Bishop Jonas

Thaliath, the founder of Dharmaram.  We observe this day as the day of the

deceased members of Dharmaram.  The concelebrated solemn Requiem Mass was

led by Father Rector.  Prayers for the dead were offered in the cemetery.

 

*The Institute of Canon Law* organized a National Seminar on “The Eastern

Code: Twenty Years at the Service of the Church” on 10-11 November 2010.

 

*Rector’ Day (20-21 November)* was celebrated with the usual programmes:

Prayer Service; Malayalam Drama on Saturday and Sunday; Concelebrated Holy

Eucharist; Family Gathering; Rector’s  Day gift to staff and students;

Festal lunch, etc.

 

This year the drama was based on the life and activities of Blessed Chavara.

II Year Theologians staged it.  Their Master Father Jose Nandhikara was the

inspiration to select this theme.  Father Eby Cheerkathottam, CMI wrote the

script; Fathers Varghese Kelamparambil, CMI and Biju Kaukappilly, CMI

directed the Drama.  The students put up a fantastic performance.

 

We invited all our domestic staff (from the accountant to sweepers) for the

festal lunch on Sunday 21 November.  Father Rector and Administrator gave

them gifts (cash) in the meeting that followed the lunch.

 

On Saturday 20 November the students of PG Hostel (76 priests who are doing

PG courses at DVK) and the Sisters of Adhyayana (around 50 Sisters) came to

greet Father Rector.  They shared our lunch.

Father Joby Thurackal left for Belgium on 05 October 2010. He intends to do

his doctoral studies in Psychology and Spirituality at the University of

Christ Alumni Association: Father Rector blessed and inaugurated the office

of the Christ Alumni Association in the Central Block of the University.

Mr. Jugnu Uberoi, one of the first students of Christ College, and a great

benefactor of the University, is the President of this Association.

 

BAP: Ten years back, when Father Augustine Thottakara, CMI was the Dean of

the Faculty of Philosophy of DVK, he started get-togethers of the Christian

Philosophy Professors of Bangalore. Bangalore has around fifteen institutes

of Philosophy. It is now known as BAP (Bangalore Academy of Philosophers:

name given by Father Kurian Kachappilly). It meets once or twice a year.

Paper presentation, Discussion and Dinner are the items of these meetings.

The latest meeting of BAP was on 23 September at St. Peter's Seminary.

Father Kurian Kachappilly is the present Secretary of BAP.

 

Ten-Day Solemn Rosary of Dharmaram was from 01 to 10 October. The solemn

conclusion was on 10 October with the St. Thomas Parish Community. We

wanted to conduct the final prayers and blessing in our play grounds; but

heavy rains prevented it.

 

Bishop Salesius Mugambi, Bishop of Meru, Kenya, visited us 08 October. He

addressed the Community after supper in BJTM Auditorium. CMI Priests (from

Coimbatore Province) are working in his diocese.

 

Bishop Jorge Ruben Lungones, Bishop of Lomas de Zamora, Buenos Aires,

Argentina, and his Vicar General Msgr. Jorge Vasquez visited us on 11

October. The Bishop addressed the Community after the supper. Our priests

(from Mysore Province) are working in this diocese.

 

New Church for Blessed Chavara Parish, Egpura: A huge and beautiful Church,

a four-storey building which has facilities for Parish offices, Priests'

quarters, Guests' quarters, Catechism class rooms, Parish hall, Conference

halls, Meeting rooms, and facilities for a Convent, were blessed and

inaugurated by Bishop Sebastian Adyanthrath (Ernakulam) on 10.10.2010 at

10.10 a.m. The chief guest of the Public meeting in the evening was

Archbishop Emeritus Ignatius Pinto. Rector Dharmaram College, former Vicars

of the Parish, and many other dignitaries were present in this meeting.

This multi-crore project, which was completed in just eight months time, was

made possible only because of the dynamic, charismatic and powerful

leadership of father Davis Panadan, CMI, the Parish Priest. He ably used

all the avenues of fund-generation to collect money for this mega project.

People of Egipura revere him as a great hero, and really he is a great hero!

 

Holy Family Church, Hongsandra organized a Bible Convention on 13-17 October

2010. An average of 3500 people participated in the event. This spiritual

exercise was led by fathers Xavier Khan Vattayi and Saju Ilanjniyil.

Fathers Sebastian Payyapilly and Devasiachan Mukulath are the Parish Priest

and Assistant Parish Priest respectively.

 

Asvas News: Asvas, Dharmaram Centre for Disabled, now accommodates twelve

physically challenged young men. They are given training in computer

skills, language skills, etc. Computers are supplied by an organization for

disabled persons. Father John Marius Manickanamparambil is the Director of

Asvas. He also convened a meeting of some citizens of this locality to

deliberate on sponsorship programmes for the Centre.

 

Samanvaya Brothers: Seventeen brothers (III Theology) of Samanvya studied

this first Semester at Dharmaram. They go back to Bhopal on 20 October

2010. Dharmaram is thankful for their presence and activities here.

 

Semestral Holidays: DVK closes for semesteral holidays on 18 October. The

second semester begins on 02 November 2010.

Talent Week: LCA organized a Talent Week from 02 to 07 August (Monday to
Saturday) to exhibit the literary and cultural talents of the students. A
day each was assigned to each section, and they staged items like group
music, skits, dance, etc. for about 45 minutes.

Engineering College: The second block of Engineering College in Devadan
Campus was blessed and inaugurated by Father Rector on Monday 09 September.
Three more blocks are coming up.

Semestral Dialogue with students of Theology, Philosophy and Christ
University were conducted in the second week of August 2010.

Independence Day was celebrated with the usual programmes. Flag Hoisting
was by Colonel Mathai John from MEG. Different competitions were held in
connection with this festival like poetry writing, short story writing, etc.
Patriotic Song Competition was appreciated by all. E-Section won the prize.

Syro-Malabar Laity Centre: Mar Mathew Arackal, Chairman of the Commission
for Laity of Syro-Malabar Church, inaugurated the Bangalore Chapter of
Laity. Its office at St. Thomas Forane Church was blessed by Mar George
Njaralakatt, Bishop of Mandya, inaugurated by Father Rector on 15 August
2010.

Onam was celebrated with due solemnity: Bible Service, Collage competition,
Nadan-Pattu (folksong) competition, Pookkalam competition, etc. were the
items. This year's Pookkalams were really fantastic. College Section
secured the first prize. Onam's cultural evening was organized by
F-Section.

Father Shince Pottokaran left for France on 25 August. He intends to do his
doctoral studies at the Catholic University of Lile in France. Community
wished him all the best and God's blessings.

Father Thomas Kadankavil delivered this year's Dharma Endowment Lectures at
DVK on 26 and 27 August on "Changing Patters of Thought. Philosophy as
Interpersonal Communication".

Our Basket Ball Team was runners-up in the National Basket Ball Tournament
organized by St. John's Medical College. Congratulations to the team!

Dharmaram is hosting the Inter-Sem Zonal Tournaments of Basket Ball, Volley
Ball and Shuttle Badminton.

Father Saji Parakadavil, CMI, Missionary in South Africa, shared his mission
experiences with the Community on 30 August.

Benefactors' Day: 01 September is the death anniversary of Father Herbert
Kringe, a great benefactor, sponsor and well wisher of Dharmaram. We
observed this day as "Benefactors' Day". The concelebrated Holy Eucharist
was led by Father Geo Pallikunnel, Director of the Benefactors' Department.
A Bible Service to pray for all our benefactors was also organized by our
students.

Benefactors' Day Orchestra was conducted on Saturday 04 September (for
Campus Communities) and on Sunday 05 September (for public). It was a
two-hour programme. Brothers did a wonderful work. All appreciated the
performance. Congratulations to the singers and instrumentalists.

Nodal Office of Christ University in Thiruvananthapuram: Christ University
bought the old Provincial House at Vazhuthacaud of CMI St. Joseph's Province
Thriuvananthapuram. This place will function as a Nodal Office of the
University in Kerala. The office was blessed and inaugurated by Father
Rector on Saturday 04 September 2010. Other Off-Campus Centres of the
University are: Devadan Campus, Kengeri; Lavasa, Pune; and Ghaziabad, Delhi.

Inter-Institute (DVK & St. Peter's) Canon Law Symposium was organized on
Thursday 16 September at DVK. The theme was "Synod of Bishops and Episcopal
Conference".

Golden Jubilee of the Commitment to Consecrated Life: As in the last year,
this year too we have invited all those CMI members who celebrate the Golden
Jubilee of their Religious Profession this year, and who have served at
Dharmaram. The celebrations were on 18 September. The following members
took part: Fathers George Kunnath, George Kaniarakath, Antony Kelamparambil,
Pauly Thazhath, Varghese Kottoor, Joseph Vithayathil, Jose Paul Eduthan, and
Brother Stanly Kandamparambil. Father Varghese Pathikulangara and Brother
Joseph Mutanolil of Dharmaram are also Jubilarians. Father John
Menonkariyil (who was Financial Administrator at Dharmaram) could not take
part. Holy Eucharist, Felicitation Meeting and Dinner were the items of the
day.

ASVAS. Dharmaram Centre for the Differently Abled: The old Post Office
building, later Adhyayana hostel of Sisters, in the Bannerghatta Road was
modified to function as a Centre for disabled persons. This Centre Asvas
was blessed and inaugurated by father Rector on Monday 20 September. In the
inaugural meeting MLA Sri Ramalinga Reddy, Corporator Sri Manjunath and Mr.
J.P. Gadkari, President Pariver, took part. There were cultural items
presented by students of the blind schools of Jayanagar. The Centre has
already started functioning. A three-month training programme for disabled
persons is being offered now. Some of them now stay at the Centre. Father
John Marius Manicknamparambil is the Director of Asvas.

Pastoral: We are trying to start new Mass Centre in Tampuchettipalaya in
Krishnarajapuram. There are around 140 Kerala families in this area. We
are also trying to secure a plot of land in this area.

Another Centre was started in Anubhava-nagar near the Campus of Bangalore
University. Father Antony Payyappilly is in charge. The formal
inauguration was on the 14th March; one-day retreat (Fathers Rathappilly and
Chandrankunnel), confessions, and holy Eucharist (Father Rector) were the
programmes of the day.

The construction of the new Church of St. Jude's Parish, Udayanagar, is
nearing completion. Father Sebastian Edathikavil, who recently came back
from USA, took charge of the Parish from father Joby Thurackal.

St. Sebastian's Parish, Anepalaya had in all these years the big problem of
lack of space. Fortunately now the neighbouring plot of land is on sale,
and the Parish Priest Father Kurian Perumpallikunnel is energetically trying
to raise funds to purchase this property.  Say, “Yes, to Life, No to Abortion”

Methods of Meditation: Acarya Francis Vineeth Vadakethala of Vidyavanam
Ashram gave some practical tips and methods of meditation to the Community
during the time of morning meditation for three days: 21-23 June 2010. It
was a very useful exercise.

Inner Smile Meditation was introduced by Father Varghese Kottoor to the
Community during the morning meditation on 01 July.

Extension Lectures: Father Varghese Kokkadan, CMI General Councillor for
Social Apostolate, spoke to the Community on "Social Thrust of CMI
Congregation" on 22 June.

Prof. Dr. Geraldine Sanjay (Victoria Hospital) gave a lecture on "Value of
Life" to the Community on 20 July.

Members of the Pro-Life Group of Jesus Youth presented a slide show on the
crime of abortion and its evil effects. This event was organized in view of
the Pro-Life Marathon, which the San Thom Youth is organizing, on 01 August
2010.

New Comers' Day: Thursday 24 June: Father Rector led the solemn
concelebrated Holy Eucharist in the morning and prayed for the New Comers.
At 06.15 p.m. E-Section organized the Welcome Meeting in the BJTM
auditorium. New Comers (I Year philosophers, I Year theologians, Samanvaya
brothers, and new staff members) introduced themselves. There were cultural
items. The programme of the day was concluded with the welcome dinner.

Conclusion of the Priests' Year at St. Thomas Church: Sunday 27 June 2010:
Father Rector led the Holy Eucharist for the Parish Community at 05.30 p.m.
in which many priests of the Campus took part. Father Francis Thonippara
(President, DVK) gave the message of the day. Jubilarian-priests were
honoured by the Parish Priest Father Mathew Koikara.

Father Dr. Joseph Kureethara (Christ University) successfully defended his
doctoral dissertation in Mathematics at St. Xavier's College, Pallayamkottai
(M.S. University, Thirunnelvely) on Monday 28 June. He did it very well.
Cordial congratulations to Father Kureethara!

LCA Secretaries: Brother Nilson Pallissery (C-Section, I Year Theology) and
Brother Cijo Chennadu (E-Section, II Year Philosophy) were elected (on
28.06) by the students as Secretary and Assistant Secretary respectively of
LCA (Literary and Cultural Academy) of Dharmaram for the year 2010-2011.
Cordial congratulations to them!

Pastoral Initiation: Father Rector, all the Parish Priests and
Priests-in-Charge of important centres met the students of Theology on 29
June 2010 and shared their views on pastoral ministry with them. Father
Joseph Thamaraveliyil (Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly) spoke on some
practical aspects of pastoral ministry in Bangalore.

Dharmaram Administration: Father Rector (Augustine Thottakara), Father
Administrator (Francis Kizhakumthala) and Heads of Institutions: DVK
President (Francis Thonippara), V.C. Christ University (Thomas
Chathamparampil), Parish Priest St. Thomas Forane Church (Mathew Koikara),
Director Devadan Campus (Sebastian Thekkedath), Principal Christa Vidyalaya
(Antony Payyappilly), Dean Philosophy and Director Computer Labs (Saju
Chackalackal), et alii., met the student community (on 01 July) and
explained to them the administrative set-up of Dharmaram, financial matters,
etc.

Duhkrana-03 July: As usual the important event of the day was the solemn
Raasa led by Father Viju Painadath. Family gathering was at 08.40 p.m.
Father Rector gave the message of the day. The toppers of last year's DVK
examinations were given prizes. Quiz programme, Margam Kali (C-Section),
etc. were the other events of the meeting.

Canonical Visitation: Father Prior General commenced his canonical
visitation of Dharmaram on Saturday 10 July. At 06.oo p.m. Solemn Ramsa in
English. Then Father General gave his introductory message. The conclusion
of the Visitation was on 29 July.

Inauguration of LCA was on 13 July. The Chief Guest was Prof. Prakash
Belvadi (Film Director and organizer of stage performances). Father Prior
General and Father Rector also spoke on the occasion.

Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel - 16 July: The message for the Renovation
of Vows was delivered by Father Arun Chully. Family Gathering at 08.40 p.m.
Father Prior General gave the message. Greeting song, action song, slide
show on the development of Carmelite family, etc. were the other items.

Job-Mela for the Physically Challenged Persons of Karnataka: Department for
the Welfare of Disabled of the Government of Karnataka, with the help of
Dharmaram DASS, organized this Job-Mela on 17-18 July at the Primary Section
Campus of Christ School. 3327 handicapped persons took part in this
mega-event. 434 persons secured jobs in public and private organizations
and 500 were selected by the Government for job training. Father John
Marius Manickanamparampil is the new Director of DASS (Dharmaram Association
of Social Service).

Empowerment of Syro-Malabar Laity: Chairman of the Commission for Laity of
Syro-Malabar Church Bishop Mathew Arackal, Secretary Advocate V.C. Sebastian
and Advocate Jose Vithayathil visited Bangalore on 24-26 July to organize
the Syro-Malabar laity of Bangalore. The inaugural session was on Saturday
24 July at 09.30 a.m. in which most of the Parish Priests of twenty-one
Syro-Malabar parishes of Bangalore, Priests-in-Charge of Centres (22), and
lay delegates from all these Parishes and Centres took part. Definite plans
were discussed and decided.

Father James Pampara is elected as the Vice President of the Oriental Canon
Law Society of India. Our cordial congratulations to him!

CSA (Centre for Social Action) of Christ University has been working in
fourteen villages in Hosakote Taluk (45 KM. away from Bangalore), with the
financial support from Kindernothilfe of Germany, for the past seven years
for their total and integral development. CSA worked in these villages with
its employed assistants, local animators and student volunteers of Christ
University. After seven years of their hard work, now the villagers feel
confident to carry on all the developmental projects, which CSA has
introduced there. So on Monday 26 July 2010 CSA officially withdrew its
active involvement in these villages. The villagers organized a grand
Thanksgiving Celebration on this day. Father Augustine Thottakara (Rector
and Chancellor) was the Chief Guest.

The Pro-Life Group of Jesus Youth organized adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament for six days, that is, Monday to Friday, 26 to 31 July, from 08.oo
a.m. to 08.oo p.m. in one of our small chapels. They organized it for the
success of the Pro-Life Marathon on 01 August.

Pro-Life Marathon: San Thom Youth of St. Thomas Forane Church organized a
mammoth Marathon on Sunday 01 August 2010 to create awareness among public
about the heinous crime of abortion and female infanticide. Around 3000
Bangaloreans, especially youth, also our brothers, took part in this
9.9-kilometer Marathon. 500 volunteers manned and managed the event.
Famous cricket player Robin Uttappa flagged off the run at 07.oo a.m. from
the play grounds of Dharmaram. Presence of Archbishop Bernard Moras, film-
and sports personalities, politicians and CMI Major Superiors enhanced the
solemnity of the occasion.

Father Cherian Thunduparambil was Executive Director of the event. Brother
Francis Manavalan (III Year Theology) gave powerful leadership to San Thom
Youth. Brother George Panamthottam and all the III Year Theologians were
actively involved in the organization. Fathers Augustine Thottakara
(Rector) and Mathew Koikara (Vicar, St. Thomas Forane Church) were the
patrons.

This definitely was a historic event, and it was a grand success, a greater
success than we expected. There were extensive positive media reports about
the event. Congratulations to the organizers!

Major Superiors' Meeting: the Members of General Council and all the
Provincials were at Dharmaram on 30-31 July and 01 August for their annual
meeting. They conducted discussions with Rectors of CMI Major Seminaries,
President DVK, Deans, Masters and Staff members on the formation of our
students.

Msgr. Jose Chittooparampil, CMI, Bishop-elect of Rajkot, visited Dharmaram
on 01 August. Community gave him a warm reception during the supper time.
Father Prior General garlanded him and offered him Dharmaram mementos.

New Church: City Ward (St. Alphonsa Ward, Sampangi Nagar) has been trying
hard to purchase a place of its own for the past two decades. Holy Mass,
Catechism classes and other activities were carried out in rented/leased
buildings. Recently they could purchase a building near the Double Road.
The blessing and inauguration of the new Church by Archbishop Bernard Moras
was on 01 August 2010. This indeed is a great achievement. Father Mathew
Anatharackal is the Priest-in-Charge. Very cordial congratulations to him
and his team!

Christ University is adjudged as one of the best Colleges in the country by
the Journal India Today. According to their rating Christ
University/College is the best College of Bangalore. On national level
Christ is the fifth best in Commerce, sixth best in Arts and seventh best in
Science. Congratulations to Christ University!

Christ School also secured100% pass in the SSLC board exams.

Dharmaram News
New Staff Members: There are few additions to Dharmaram Staff this year.
They are: John Marius Manickanamparampil, Joy Kizhakayil (he stays at
Ghaziabad, Delhi), Roy Vettikuzhiyil (Philosophy), Benoy Checkonthayil
(Philosophy), Siby Kavatt (Theology), and Eby Cheerakathottam (Asst. Parish
Priest).
This year there are 65 members in Dharmaram Staff. Besides, there are
around 18 young CMI priests doing higher studies at DVK and at Christ
University.

Father Sunny Punneliparambil is transferred to the Province (Thrissur). He
is now serving as the Novice Master. After one or two years of service he
will come back to Dharmaram.
Three young priests, namely, Bastin Mangalath, Jomon Kolencherry
and Samji Vadakkedam, completed their PG Courses at Christ University and
have gone back to their Provinces. Bastin is teaching at Mulamattam
College, Jomon is the Administrator of Christ School and College, Bogadi,
Mysore and Samji is now doing BEd. at Mannanam.

Rev. Deacons bade farewell to Dharmaram after their Pastoral Course on 22
May 2010. Their Ordinations will take place between 26 December 2010 and 02
January 2011.

Annual Retreat of Dharmaram started on 29 May evening and ended on 05 June
morning. Preachers were Father George Kalathil, CMI and Father Mathew

Renewal of Vows of Dharmaram Brothers took place on 05 June, Saturday,
during the Holy Eucharist. Father Rector received the vows as the
representative of the Provincials. Father Jose Nandhikara gave the message
of the day.

Graduation Ceremonies and Convocation of Christ University: The Graduation
Ceremonies of the UG Courses took place in two sessions on 29 May 2010. The
first Convocation of Christ University took place on Sunday 30 May at 05.oo
p.m. Eminent guests from our partner Universities of USA, UK and Germany
also took part in this solemn event. Chief Guest was Prof. Gerard John
Pillay, Vice Chancellor of Liverpool Hope University. Guest of Honour was
Prof. Manfred Kiesel, Vice President of University of Applied Sciences of
Wurzburg, Germany. Chancellor Father Augustine Thottakara presided over the
function. Vice Chancellor Father Thomas Chathamparambil gave the message of
the day.

Inauguration of the Academic Year of DVK was on Monday 07 June. At 09.15
a.m. Holy Eucharist at Dharmaram Chapel, and at 11.oo a.m. Inaugural
Function at DVK auditorium.

New Book: Father Saju Chackalackal edited and published a scholarly work
entitled “Indigenous Philosophizing. Indian Horizons”. Congratulations to
him!

Conclusion of the Year of Priests was organized on 11 June, on the Feast of
Sacred Heart of Jesus. Father Francis Kizhakumthala, Financial
Administrator, led the solemn concelebrated Holy Eucharist and gave the
message of the day.

Christ the Guru under the Bodhi Tree: Deacon Anto Chackiath has created with
cement a beautiful statue of Christ, the Guru, in padmasana posture. It is
now installed in the cactus garden in front of Dharmaram refectory. The
bodhi tree and pedestal were created by artists from Chalakudy. Very
cordial congratulations to Deacon Anto Chackiath.

New Bell and Bell Tower (Belfry): A small beautiful bell tower is
constructed behind the Chapel, on the top floor, under the supervision of
Father Administrator Francis Kizhakumthala. Bell and tower were blessed and
inaugurated on the feast day of Sacred Heart of Jesus, 20 June 2010.

Solemn Feast of Sacred Heart of Jesus: Dharmaram is garden of virtues. The
real garden of all virtues and auspicious qualities is the Sacred Heart of
Jesus. Therefore, for us ‘Dharmaram’ means the most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Dharmaram College and all the allied institutions are dedicated to the care
and protection of Sacred Heart of Jesus. The solemn celebration of the
feast was on Sunday 20 June. Solemn Holy Eucharist was led by Father
Rector, assisted by all the institution heads. Around 40 priests
concelebrated. Procession of the Blessed Sacrament to DVK and Benediction
in the DVK auditorium were the other items. We invited the Campus Superiors
and Superiors of neighbouring religious communities for the festal lunch.
Around 60 Superiors and Heads of institutions shared our lunch.

General Beadles: Brother Tebin Puthenpurackal and Jinto Enchikkalayil were
elected General Beadle and Assistant General Beadle by the students.

All our Educational Institution did well in the examinations. Special
mention is to be made of Christ Junior College. As against the state pass
percentage of 49.27 the Christ students have achieved 97.46 %. 1338
students appeared for the Second PU exam. Father Jose Chennattussery is the
Principal. Christ PU Residential of Kengeri Campus also did well in the
Exams.
